Our Wedding Experience in Ghana

Our Wedding Experience in Ghana

More and more couples are choosing to get married abroad rather than in Netherland. I mean, why wouldn’t you? With such beautiful locations, gorgeous sunshine (if that’s where you choose) and more to show for your money. That said, I was still a complete nervous wreck at planning my wedding, more so because I was having to plan it over WhatsApp with our venue owner and other people who were involved. But, I thought I’d share some of the wonderful reasons to get married abroad.

We got married at a lovely Ghanian garden called Aprille Royal Garden located in tema, community 10.  Our venue is run by my aunty and her daughter, however, what they didn’t tell us is that they practically help plan everything. So, there wasn’t a need to hire a wedding planner as they literally helped with everything.

Cost wise, our wedding actually cost nearly half of what it would have cost if we got married in the Netherland. No joke. And considering we had to pay for several flights to Ghana, had to purchase new suitcases to take all our wedding stuff to Ghana (by sea) and we wanted to make sure our guest had enough to eat and drink, I think we did pretty well. Now, what you really want to know is actually how much did it cost. And although we didn’t keep track of everything we spent, we would say we spent around 15,000euros which included things from rings and bridal gown, to meal and an open bar for around 400 guests.

Traditionally, in the Netherland you get married late morning going on lunch time. In Ghana, the traditional wedding is separated from the white wedding. although some people choose to celebrate both the traditional and the white wedding the same day. At first we wanted to do both on the same day,  but we later changed it to two separate days, just to save us from too much pressure on the same day.  There was enough time for me to wake up, have breakfast (in my case, a liquid breakfast), waltz around in my dressing gown and for the bridal party to get ready.

Looking back now, although there are some minor things we’d change, if we could do it all again then we would pick the same venue, the same location, the same country. The lot. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, a better atmosphere and a better bunch of people.

Now, I know what you really want to see. Photos. We’ve kept a lot of our wedding photos private, very much like the day itself. But because I want to give you all more of an insight into my life and let you experience more things with me, I don’t mind sharing some snaps with you.
